Tip: don’t forget to place a battery in the clock and to set the time before hanging it.Next, I hung my clock on the screw and I was done. All you need is a screwdriver to secure it into the wall.Since the clock weighs only 5 pounds that was more than enough and I can be confident that my clock won’t fall on anyone’s head when they’re sitting on the sofa. It’s super strong and can hold up to 30 pounds. I used our DécoScrew to hang the clock with. This might be hard to see from the picture, but the ceiling beam is bit off to the right. I hung my clock on the centre of the wall and not centered with the beam. Using my CenterFinder within seconds I measured the space between the two windows and marked the middle with a pencil.I ended up hanging it 9″ from the top of the sofa cushions. Having someone help guiding with the height is really helpful. It’s always best to hang your wall decor closer to your furniture. Note that I did not hang it right in the middle of the wall between the ceiling beam and the sofa. First, I held the clock up above the sofa to figure out approximately how high to hang it.In this case, because the apartment I’m decorating is very small, it was important to have an almost silent ticking otherwise we’d hear it from everywhere in the space and it would most likely drive me crazy.įinding the right spot on the wall for my clock Remember this tip! When shopping for a clock, make sure to observe how loud it ticks before buying it. As you can see it’s a big clock – 36″ high by 36″ wide. If you have been a little wary and intimidated of Particular because of its complexity, now is the time to dive into using Red Giant’s incredible particle building system. Trapcode Particular is one of the plug-ins that most After Effects nerds/aficionados/experts have encountered. I will try to touch on each of the products so this will be a two-part review. In the latest Trapcode Suite 13 update, Trapcode Particular 2.5 seems to have been updated the most while Trapcode Tao is a new addition to the suite, and the rest were given modest enhancements as well. For instance, products like Mocha Pro, Keylight in After Effects and Red Giant’s Trapcode Suite 13 are enhancers that help me be as efficient as I can be as an editor without sacrificing quality for time. Because I don’t get a lot of time to play around creatively, I really need to know the suite I am working in and be as efficient as possible. Of course, you can pick and choose the product you want, such as Shine for $99 or even Particular for $399, but the entire suite is worth the investment.Īs an editor, I spend the majority of my time inside of a nonlinear editor like Adobe Premiere or Avid Media Composer/Symphony - probably 80 percent if I had to estimate, the other 20 percent is divided between color correction solutions and VFX/graphics packages like After Effects, Blackmagic Resolve, and others. It is one of the most useful but intricate plug-ins you will see with a $999 price tag to match ($199 if you are upgrading). A good resource to get your feet wet is on the Red Giant tutorial page where you can find a lot of info and in-depth tutorials from the likes of the master Harry Frank ( and Chad Perkins ( being said, if you have no idea what the Trapcode Suite entails, buckle up. The complete Trapcode Suite 13 works with After Effects (CS6 through CC 2015 officially, including the latest 2015.3 update, just make sure to download the update installer from Red Giant since it might not appear in your Red Giant Link updater), as well as a couple like Shine, 3D Stroke and Starglow that will also work in Adobe Premiere (the same version compatibility as After Effects). Inside the suite are magical plug-ins like the famous Trapcode Particular, Trapcode Form, Trapcode Mir, Trapcode Tao, Trapcode Shine, Trapcode Lux, Trapcode 3D Stroke, Trapcode Echospace, Trapcode Starglow, Trapcode Sound Keys and Trapcode Horizon. While it isn’t cheap, if you are focused on that style of motion graphics, it can definitely pay for itself after just a few jobs. One of those tools that many Adobe After Effects motion graphics artists have in their toolbox is Red Giant’s Trapcode Suite, which is currently in version 13. I'd love to see a GUI means of linking instruments to particular hanging positions-Option + drag or something. One could then duplicate symbols without ever having to navigate away from the symbol info panel in the inspector. No radial arrays, but how often do you find circular grids? Isn't that even an oxymoron? Anyway, arrays and some other drawing commands are executed in an inspector window panel and not in the menus where they could easily have keyboard equivalents. The duplicate array function does not accept negative values or y-axis offsets. This may not be a problem if you always work from templates, always recycle old drawings or simply like the default settings. It would also be great if the user could set default preferences for symbol attributes-which legends are showing, relative positions of the labels, et cetera. I think they should be grouped by default, and one should see a larger indication that you've got the whole symbol selected without having to zoom way in. One ends up accidentally moving only the color label or circuit number. (The Arrow keys without a modifier nudge selected symbols around.) It is hard to select an entire instrument symbol sometimes. Or some other means of navigating around a plot. I just think getting there is harder than it needs to be. Don't get me wrong, LXFree will make absolutely beautiful plots. The plot side of things is a little messier. A fix might be as simple as reordering a few sections. The documentation is a little old and occasionally references material in later chapters without making it explicitly clear that you haven't read something yet, but we're talking about it anyway. Doing this graphically, in the plot window, works very well but isn't always practical after the first hundred instruments. It's either a deal-breaker or I'm just being stupid. There is even a database field for "Group," though no apparent way to select all the members of say, the Cool Torms group and change the color for every instrument. It may be there somewhere, or perhaps some other means of editing data for groups of symbols meeting some criteria. I couldn't find a way to edit in a list view though, with sortable columns and multiple selections. The database side of things is very good in general. I gladly stick with it confident that its a mighty good choice that will keep evolving, with mine and other users help and feedback, from great to fabulous.Īnd seriously, if you look around, which are the comparable alternatives to the prize of 0 bucks?Ĭurrently at version 1.7.1, the symbol libraries are great-no moving fixtures, but that's okay with me. However I can tell since Im an old user that the software has evolved greatly and just keeps getting better and better everyday. Setting up devices like moving lights is also a bit of a weak spot I think. Ive never managed to make much sense of it. The part I like the least in this free app is the Symbol Editor and the way symbols and "Keys" are connected. Now anyone who understands the basics of lightdesign can create and edit a lightplot, easily and for free. Sending pdf attachments and a list of requests and questions to touringsites or guesting groups is finally a thing of the past! Its great to be able to communicate editable plots. Of course I also do all my lightplots in LXFree or LXBeams and encourage venues, collegues and others who may have any opinion of value regarding my plans to download this app. Its a strong side of the LXFree project with great potentials. The part I use most is its integration with LXConsole, Qlab MIDI, OSC and Applescript. Im an old Maclux user but since a few years I use only the LXBeams version of LXFree so maybe I shouldnt review the LXFree, but most stuff of any importance is in the free version as well so I guess it´s OK. A very good app with absolutely marvellous support! The lowdown: This wonderfully geeky digital alarm clock projector is loaded with convenient metrics and cool features. Power source: AC adapter with backup battery (type not specified) This metric-loaded clock that tracks the temp & lunar cycles Super bright! I can't believe it took me this long to know this existed. Now I just turn my head and look up at the ceiling and there it is. I hated have to lift myself up (I know I'm lazy) to check the time. One reviewer wrote: “I absolutely love this clock! My bed is low and our cable box was not visible. The only downside is that it doesn’t offer easy-flip orientation. This clock is available in black, gold, rose gold, or white. Finally, there are several bonus features, such as an FM radio, a thermometer, and a humidity tracker. You can adjust the dimmer on the clock display and the wall projection separately, and there’s a focus control ring for crisp projection. It’s built with a snooze feature and two alarms (which is perfect for couples or folks who need a backup alarm), and you can choose between 12- or 24-hour formatting. The lowdown: With an adjustable ringer that boasts 15 sound levels, along with a USB charging port that lets you power up your phone, this projection wall clock is a versatile option in a sleek package. Power source: USB cord with backup battery (type not specified) A sleek clock that charges your phone & comes in 3 colors I’ve included a variety of styles, sizes, and price ranges. Now that you’re equipped with the knowledge you need to choose the best projection alarm clock, check out my list below. With some options, you can also find bonus features like AM/FM radios, sleep timers, built-in thermometers, humidity trackers, or other bells and whistles. Another nice feature to have is a focus ring, which lets you manually adjust the resolution so the digits on your wall are extra crisp.īeyond that, evaluate all of the regular features you’d want in an ordinary alarm clock - snooze buttons, alarm sounds, volume adjustments, or the ability to choose between 12-hour or 24-hour time settings. Some clocks offer easy-rotation features where you can push a button and flip the numbers upside down to suit the positioning of your bed. (And some budget options can’t be dimmed at all).įlip orientation is another thing to keep on your radar. Also consider whether you need a dimming feature some clocks allow you to dim the display lights and the projection lights, while others only allow you to do one or the other. You may want to think about what color you prefer the digits to be since they’ll add a slight glow to the room - most are either red or blue. When shopping around, there are a handful of specs to keep top of mind. The best projection alarm clocks are easy to read and simple to program, with a swivel attachment so you can control where the time is displayed (whether you’d like it on your ceiling or a wall). Whether you’re a morning person who wakes up easily, or the type who tends to sleep through several snooze cycles, a projection alarm clock can be a great bedside addition.
